The Submandibular Duct: Anatomy and Function
What is the Submandibular Duct?
The submandibular duct, also known as Wharton's duct, is a small tube that transports saliva from the submandibular gland to the oral cavity. It is approximately 5 centimeters in length and has a thinner wall than the parotid duct.
Embryonic Development
During embryonic development, the submandibular and parotid salivary glands migrate and acquire lengthy ducts.
Clinical Significance
Further research is needed to fully understand the clinical implications of these developmental changes.
